I love to take notes. A good note taking strategy will allow you to learn your subject better, in a smaller time frame. Good notes also help you to brush up your subject at a later date. There are lots of note taking tools available – free or otherwise.
MyNotex is a free note taking software that runs in Linux. It is available in the repositories of most Linux distributions.
In Ubuntu, you can install MyNotex from the Ubuntu Software Center, or from the command line as follows :
$ sudo apt-get install mynotex
It is available in Fedora repositories too.

The first time you start using MyNotex note taking software, you will have to create a new file, give it a unique name and save it to a location on your hard disk. MyNotex stores all the data in files of extension .mnt.
From then on, you can start entering all your data in the file.
MyNotex interface is simple to understand and require no learning curve. Each MyNotex file (lets call it a notebook) can contain any number of subjects. And each subject can have unlimited notes.
Notes within subjects have the following features – an appropriate title, a date of creation/modification, any number of tags (separated by commas), and text. Optionally, you can also attach files of any type to each notes.
The main area of the notes interface is where you enter your text. It supports limited rich text functions. You can change the color, font, and alignment of the text.
Unfortunately, MyNotex doesn’t yet support embedding images in notes. If you want to insert an image in your notes, you have to do so by attaching the image to the note.
More over, it is not possible to embed notes within notes or subjects within another subject.
MyNotex allows you to encrypt individual notes in your notebook file. This is a useful feature if, for instance, you have a note that contain sensitive information that you want to keep from prying eyes. Encrypted notes in the notebook are shown in red.
At a later stage if you wish to convert the encrypted note to a normal one, that is possible too with the click of a button.
